The Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Montalcino is housed in part of the former convent of Sant'Agostino, dating back to the 15th century and adjacent to the church of Santi Filippo and Giacomo. The 1977 restoration made it possible to bring together the two pre-existing museums, the Diocesan and the Civic; In this way, a suitable environment was created to welcome and enhance the large altarpieces, tables and sculptural groups which, in chronological order, lead on a long, exciting journey in the artistic production linked to the city.

The large and organic collection allows you to discover the local artistic production from the Middle Ages to the historical twentieth century, with particular emphasis on the Sienese pictorial tradition of the '400 and' 500, represented by masters such as Bartolo di Fredi, Simone Martini, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Giovanni di Paolo and Sano di Pietro.

Among the works housed in the Montalcino Museum stand out numerous painted wooden sculptures linked, in the Middle Ages, to a series of liturgical needs and created by the greatest artists of the time, from Jacopo della Quercia to Francesco di Valdambrino. The wooden statues give the whole environment a sort of sacredness and give the visitor an idea of the wealth of works of art enjoyed by the churches and chapels of Montalcino and the territory.
