The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria is located in the historic center of the city. The Museum is also known as the National Museum of Magna Graecia and was born in 1959. The museum collection is one of the most important from Magna Graecia. The collection has grown over time with the finds unearthed from the various excavation campaigns conducted between the area of Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Locri, Sibari and Lamezia Terme. The exhibition is organized in different thematic sections: prehistory and protohistory, Greek, numismatic, Roman and Byzantine and underwater archeology. Among the most significant works are: the Riace Bronzes, the Philosopher's Head, Apollo's Acrolyte in marble, the Dioscuri Group, the Bronze Tables, the Collections of pinakes, jewels, medals and bronze mirrors. The top finds of the entire collection and, in particular, of the underwater section are certainly the Riace Bronzes. Riace bronzes were found in the province of Reggio and are two large perfectly preserved bronze statues.The bronzes are the identifying works of the Magna Graecia Museum and culture. Of great interest are the Pinakes, or terracotta squares found in the temples of Locri and Reggio Calabria. The depictions refer to the cult of Persephone and the god of the underworld Hades, who kidnapped the girl to marry her. The Museum is now a research, documentation and meeting center for all lovers and scholars of the subject. It organizes cultural events, exhibitions and conferences related to archeology and the world of Magna Graecia.
