From 17 December to 4 June 2023
28 thousand years ago, a young hunter of about 15 died in the woods of the Finale area. His is a violent death, which may have occurred following an attack by a bear during a hunting trip, which caused a wound on his face and left shoulder. He was buried, with great honours, inside the Caverna delle Arene Candide where he remained hidden until Friday 1 May 1942 when the archaeologists Luigi Cardini and Virginia Chiappella brought him back to light.
The exceptional nature of the find is underlined, right from the early stages of the excavation, by the richness of the equipment which leads to the baptizing of the individual as a "Young Prince". Only eighty in all of Europe the burials found that can be assimilated to the discovery of that day, in the midst of the war events of the Second World War.
Eighty years after the discovery, the anniversary is celebrated with an exhibition that presents to the public a selection of photographs taken by Virginia Chiappella's Leica. The excited moments of the discovery are described by the words of Luigi Bernabò Brea, first Superintendent of Antiquities of Liguria and director of research campaigns, by the daily entries in Luigi Cardini's excavation diary and by the personal considerations of Virginia Chiappella.
A tactile station allows you to discover firsthand the kit that accompanied the Young Prince on his journey to the afterlife while a mannequin reproduces the individual's clothing to understand the lifestyle and clothing in use in the Paleolithic. The exhibition, previously set up in the prestigious Aycardi Theater in Finalborgo, is now moving to the rooms of the Finale Archaeological Museum with some new features. In fact, it will be possible to attend the screening of an unpublished film that offers a three-dimensional reconstruction of the burial while the young visitors will be able to try their hand at a competition that will reward the most beautiful drawing of the Young Prince and have themselves photographed in the likeness of our protagonist of the exhibition.
The exhibition, integrated with the visit of the rooms of the Museum and the Caverna delle Arene Candide, offers the opportunity to explore interesting themes related to rituals, daily life, subsistence and prehistoric material culture. Two guides published by the Museum, dedicated to the Arene Candide and the Paleolithic, accompany the exhibition and are available at the bookshop.
