From October 16, 2020 to January 17, 2021, the exhibition Et in Arcadia Ego will take place at the National Gallery of Ferrara, dedicated to the painting by Guercino of the same name, the second appointment of the exhibition series dossier Guardami! Sono una storia... realized thanks to the collaboration between the Estensi Galleries and the DiDiArt Laboratory of the Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Ferrara. After the exhibition on the Portaroli by Cristoforo Munari known as il Pitocchetto from the Brera Art Gallery, the painting by Guercino (Cento, 1591 - Bologna, 1666) from the National Galleries of Ancient Art Barberini Corsini in Rome arrives in Ferrara. The painting. The painting was probably created between 1618 and 1622, years in which the young painter came into contact with Venetian and Emilian painting styles that deeply influenced his style, showing two young shepherds observing an unusual element: a human skull. It is precisely this latter, resting on a wall ruined by time, that seems to address them by uttering the words engraved on the stone: Et in Arcadia ego, a Latin phrase that can be translated as "Even in Arcadia, I (am)." With this work, Arcadia, the mythical region of Ancient Greece, considered a rural and idyllic place, symbol of the happy first age of mankind, seems to become part of the domain of Death. The work thus becomes a "memento mori" in which the artist juxtaposes the youth and carefreeness of the shepherds with the inevitable fate of death that unites us all, creating an atmosphere of reflection and contemplation, poetic and deeply evocative.
