Hosted on the first floor of Palazzo dei Diamanti, consisting of the Hall of Honor and the sixteenth-century apartments of Virginia de’ Medici, the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara offers a significant view of works by Ferrarese artists from the 13th to the 17th century. The collection includes the medieval frescoes from the churches of San Bartolo and Sant’Andrea, through the fifteenth-century paintings of Cosmè Tura and Ercole de’ Roberti, to the eighteenth-century works of Scarsellino, Carlo Bononi and Guercino, up to the drawings of Gandolfi and Crespi. Alongside these masterpieces of local production, there are works by Gentile da Fabriano, Andrea Mantegna, and Carpaccio. Since the inauguration of the Pinacoteca in 1836, a large part of the collection has been enriched by works from churches located in the area, including a series of works by Garofalo, who in collaboration with Dosso Dossi, created the elaborate Costabili Polyptych.
