The Museo Civico is a historical-artistic museum inside the thirteenth-century Castle of the Ventimiglia family. Started in 1317 by Count Francesco I Ventimiglia on the hill of San Pietro d'Ypsigro, from which the nickname Castle of good air derives, and from which Castelbuono took its name. The original architecture features Arab-Norman-Swabian compositional characteristics. The Castle is composed of three corner towers and a pre-existing round tower from the Byzantine era (12th century). Inside, a courtyard with a staircase provides access to the two upper floors, where today the permanent exhibitions of urban planning, archaeology, sacred art, modern art, and contemporary art are located. Regularly, contemporary art exhibitions are hosted on the ground floor. On the second floor, next to the Sacred Art section, is the evocative Platina Chapel, adorned with stuccoes by the brothers Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta, executed in 1683, where a silver reliquary (1521) houses the relic of the skull of Saint Anne, the patron saint of Castelbuono, along with the artistic wooden "Choir" (1760), a work by the sculptor from Castelbuono, Domenico Coco.

With the extinction of the main branch of the Ventimiglia family, the Castle was purchased by the citizens in 1920 through a public collection, and then donated to the Municipality of Castelbuono, which decreed its public use. The structural restoration and museum setup intervention, completed in 2011, made it possible to define a museum entity. Today, it is an active cultural producer, committed to promoting the local and Mediterranean historical-artistic heritage through contemporary languages.
