“How has our relationship with the environment changed and does it change over time?
Can there be a different conception and definition of it based on our more or less mediated relationship with what is defined as external to the human being? And how does the consideration of ourselves change based on this perception? In a liquid society where performance, individualism and self-assertion prevail at the expense of community growth, sharing and the longer life of goods, the Environment understood as an ecosystem is transformed into a mere land of exploitation aimed at the mere achievement profit and productivity goals. More familiar than the natural environment, it becomes the virtual one, an intangible space but strongly characterized by an identity point of view in which each individual spends most of his time and cultivates his own aptitudes and desires. A non-place (not so much in Marc Augé's sense as more in its intangibility and impermanent inconsistency) which is a projection of its own desirability and an expression of its own tension towards becoming.
The real and virtual environment represent the two opposite poles of a playing field, that of conscience, in which the fate of man's earthly permanence is decided. Ground Control, title inspired by Major Tom of Space Oddity, aims to be an investigation of the relationship between Man, Environment and Technology through photography: the current sense of omnipotence and control by Man over the Environment deriving from technological progress and from its predominance and control over time, it must ignite reflections on the contemporaneity and future of this very delicate relationship which from a sterile monologue must return to being a dialogue.
This exhibition is dedicated to Francesco Convertini, whose future ended too soon. Ciulicchio, as we all called him, designed the settings for this exhibition and made them with our hands. His future would have been bright and shiny, and he would have made all of us so too through his inexhaustible genius and will to live. In his head there was no thought that could not be realized and will always be so.
Hi Francesco, your dreams are safe with us.”
