The Stanze della Memoria, inaugurated in Siena on January 27, 2007, offer an itinerary that traces the history of the city from the beginning of the twentieth century, focusing on the crucial themes of fascism and the Resistance, up to the Liberation.

Siena, with its territory, was strongly involved in the events of that twentieth century which experienced unprecedented social upheavals and war conflicts. The Stanze della Memoria want to be a window that overlooks a historical panorama from which to draw daily reasons for reflection for an ever-renewed civil commitment, which expands those spaces of freedom and social justice opened and conquered by the men and women who have been protagonists of those tormented events.

The Rooms acquire greater strength and charm because they are set up in the "Casermetta", so called by the Sienese since in 1943-1944 it was the seat of the political police of the Italian Social Republic, where the arrested anti-fascists were interrogated and tortured and from where the punitive expeditions departed against the partisans.

The itinerary consists of an educational room and 12 rooms, arranged on two floors, which trace the history of Siena in the last century, in a limited period that goes from the First World War to the Liberation. The first floor deals with squads and the advent of Fascism, dictatorship and the construction of consensus, the repression of dissent, racial laws; on the second floor the main episodes of the war and the partisan struggle are illustrated, whose memory is documented in video by some of the protagonists, up to the Liberation.

In each room there are giant posters, panels, films and narrative voices that welcome and guide the visitor during the journey and in the atmosphere of the period: visiting the Rooms of Memory allows you to get to know one of the most intense and dramatic pieces of Sienese history, a place beyond a symbolic way to cultivate and pass on the memory of the opposition to fascism.
