The Archaeological Museum of Siena is located in the historic center of the city. The Museum is housed in the spaces of the Santa Maria della Scala museum complex. The Museum was founded by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli in the 1920s and 1930s. The collections include two important sections: the topography and the antiquarium. The topographical section offers an overview of the archeology of the area with particular attention to the archaeological finds from the area of Siena, Chianti and the upper Val d'Elsa. Finds such as grave goods and funerary urns unearthed during excavation campaigns are exhibited here. The antiquarium is the section where all the public and private collections of the museum come together. The museum has increased its assets with two important acquisitions: the Chigi Zondadari and the Bonci Casuccini. The Bonci Casuccini collection, formed in the early twentieth century, consists of materials from the province and transferred to Siena. Inside the complex are the Municipal Library and the Fisiocritici Academy.
