From 16 March to 31 December 2022
Cirulli Foundation reopens to the public with the new exhibition section The women of Kabul. In the gaze of photographer Pino Settanni . The selection consists of 13 photographic shots that are part of a larger photographic campaign that the Roman photographer Pino Settanni made in 2002 when he was in Afghanistan on behalf of the Italian Army.
The photographer-artist goes beyond visual realism and juxtaposes digital graphic reworking with the wind; the female figures break down and recompose themselves in new, deformed and sometimes disturbing forms and require, as the author himself observes, “that the image be looked at carefully”.
At the center of the photographic research are the women dressed in their traditional dress, the burqa, who walk the street in a daily context of guerrilla warfare and danger, taken by multiple activities. Wrapped in long flowing dresses, they are viewed with the aesthetically sublime eye of photographer Pino Settanni and transformed into almost angelic figures. The veil ruffled by the wind, behind which the faces of women are hidden, becomes a metaphor for a difficult life, marked by the pain of serious sacrifices.
