The Museo Bagatti Valsecchi is one of the most important and best-preserved house museums in Europe, born out of the collecting passion of two brothers: the Barons Fausto and Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi. It was thanks to them that, at the end of the 19th century, the family home located in the Milanese district of Montenapoleone, between via Gesù and via Santo Spirito, was renovated, inspired by the residences of the 16th-century Lombardy. The collection they put together is very diverse and rich in paintings, furnishings, weapons, and scientific instruments, complemented by some masterpieces of Renaissance artists such as Giovanni Bellini, Bernardo Zenale, and Giampietrino.
Their project looked to the past but at the same time was incredibly modern, driven by the desire to concentrate in their home all the futuristic elements of the time - heating, running water, and electric light - and to make them coexist with the utmost elegance.
After the death of the two brothers, the house continued to be inhabited by their descendants until 1974, when the Bagatti Valsecchi Foundation was established, to which the collections were donated. It was in 1994 that the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi opened to the public, offering everyone the opportunity to visit the rooms of the newborn house museum.
Today, in addition to the permanent collection, the Museum organizes temporary exhibitions, presentations, educational activities, and performative events suitable for all types of audiences.
