From 19 October to 7 April 2024
“Light behind unfinished traces” is the textile installation by Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball (1975), which with its monumental dimensions welcomes visitors into the heart of the Museum, the Agora. As part of the museum's renewed vision, aimed at contemporary themes and practices, MUDEC presents its second site-specific project for autumn 2023, a prelude to the Exposure exhibition, scheduled for March 2024.
Working with the collections of MUDEC and the Ratti Foundation, the artist Mariana Castillo Deball selected twelve textile fragments from different eras, on the basis of which she then created her own watercolours. These images were then printed in large format on fabric and assembled with further textile elements at the laboratories of NABA, New Academy of Fine Arts, together with a group of students. In this way, three-dimensional "palimpsests" were created that shine with different meanings and stories.
For the first time the intervention on the glass surface changes the very status of the architecture, transforming it into a reflective volume on which the sculptures appear, made with light and semi-transparent fabrics. Natural light filters through this composition of textile fragments, creating a new cartography.
A program of guided tours of the collections' warehouses will allow the public to discover the pieces of the Museum reinterpreted by Deball in his installation, recreating the often invisible link between the exhibition space and the museum heritage, which becomes accessible with free entry upon reservation required at the link .
