The Bluecoat is a nearly 300 year old historic building located in the center of Liverpool and is the oldest building.
Bluecoat was born as a school for the education of less well-off children. The building changed its intended use after two hundred years, in the early 1900s, when a group of artists, looking for a studio, moved to Bluecoat. This is how from that moment the building became the artistic heart of the city and the foundations were laid for its destiny as an artistic center, which it is today.
The Bluecoat gallery was in fact officially established in 1968.
The aim was to exhibit the works of contemporary artists: Bluecoat in this way developed a program of exhibitions, music, dance, literature, live art and other performances, by local and international artists. It has hosted internationally renowned artists such as Stravinsky, Bartok, Michael Nyman and Doris Lessing. Yōko Onosi exhibited at Bluecoat in 1967 and later in 2008 to celebrate the reopening after 3 years of refurbishment.
Today Bluecoat represents one of the artistic and active hubs in the panorama of the city of Liverpool.
