The print, invented by Mitelli himself, which illustrates at the top the title in the form of a rebus, represents a cage densely inhabited by various characters. On top of the cage sits Fortune. Inside the cage are the many who, as the two quatrains at the bottom narrate, have lost their minds in various ways. Among them, the painter is depicted twice, at the top right while painting and at the bottom right while, with a small cage of birds tied to his belt, seems to be striking a Turk at his feet. This is an ironic reference to the series of engravings carved by Mitelli against the Turks who had invaded Hungary and Austria. In the center of the composition, at the top, a woman swings, under the word VAIN. Further down, an astronomer gazes at the sky, some men revel, others perform various actions, one even commits a murder. A man holds a small flag with the words COME ONE, COME ALL. The theme of madness recurs in popular prints, a print understandable to everyone and highly appreciated. The Bertarelli Collection has a significant collection of prints by Mitelli, about 470.
