Verified profile

Although dated 1573, the map, analyzed in relation to the progress of the city's fortification works and the Castle, reflects the topographic situation of Milan around 1560. It is the first engraved sheet representing the entire city. Contrary to the city maps of the 16th century, Lafrery's map has the east at the bottom right, so that the Castle is at the top, in the center of the crown formed by the fortifications. The map is an exceptional document of Milan during the Spanish domination, after the interventions promoted by the governor Ferrante Gonzaga. From the Sforza quadrilateral, two fortification works built in 1552 start, the tenaille towards Porta Comasina and the simpler one towards Porta Vercellina, demolished after 1560 for new works on the Castle's defenses.
